Surface Cleaning
& Foxing Removal
Most artwork will need a general cleaning over time. Smoke, dirt, pollutants, sunlight, water, etc. all contribute to the degradation of the surface inks and threaten the integrity of the paper.
Foxing is an age related condition caused by mold or bacteria which generally grow on acidic paper and show in yellowish/brown spotting. If left untreated, the condition will worsen over time.
Vacuum Press
Our state of the art vacuum press allows for us flatten any artwork that has become ripply or wavy whether it is due to age, water damage, or other. This preserves the artwork and the integrity of the paper and its inks.
Paper Restoration
& Tear Repair
Paper restoration is a specialty of ours at South Bay Art Conservation. We repair cracks, creases, and tears in the paper layer by layer to ensure its integrity will last and preserve the original paper as much as possible.
We can add and replace missing paper caused from previous framing jobs, where the hinging tape was improperly removed causing paper loss on the verso of the artwork.
De-Hinging &
Frame Removal
When you remove your artwork from its frame, it most likely will have hinging tape stuck to its verso. Artwork that has been framed for a long time tend to develop "tape dents" caused by the hinging tape on the verso. We remove the tape and the glue residue, sand and smooth the paper (adding extra fibers if needed).
